In the past decades energy consumption efficiency has become a prime concern for Utilities and users. Part of the challenge was that most electricity meter were electromechanical. Utilities only had metering data, which the users declared as their energy consumption. Users wrote down this data by hand and submitted when paying their utility bills.

One of the main disadvantages of manually collected data – it is not synchronized. It means that each user wrote down and submitted their data at a different time. Because of this, Utilities didn’t have correct monthly consumption information. Considering the scope of metering data and that it was all not synchronized, Utilities had a great challenge to analyze and understand it. Even then, the results could only have been estimations.

This created a demand for electronic smart electricity meters. These meters are equipped with real time clock and record consumption based on set intervals. Every 30 minutes or every hour, every meter in the country would register the consumption information. These features partly solved the data synchronization problem. Manual meter reading was still prevalent and data collection was still a long and tedious process. Even if the data is synchronized, it is still being collected manually. So to receive all metering data at the same time required further development.

Then engineers designed smart electricity meters with the ability to connect a wireless data transmission modem. With this synchronized metering data could be collected remotely. Metering data synchronization and collection problems have been solved. Now Utilities had important metering data at their disposal.

To efficiently analyze the vast amounts of metering data there was a need for a special software. Microsoft Excel wasn’t enough. Thus software developers created a special sophisticated system. The smart metering software provided Utilities with all the necessary tools. The system would control the automatic meter data reading, provide data to users for analysis and decision making, and have various tools for metering data representation . Energy system monitoring and meter data collection have been fully automated.

As a matter of fact, not only Utilities have found value in smart metering systems. Various industries have adapted the use of remote meter reading in their energy management efforts. Smart metering solutions have many applications, such as retail chains, real estate and manufacturing.

We, NAVITUS LT, are proud of being given the opportunity to put our contribution in making electricity network smart. We designed and developed meter data management platform Enersis. Because retail chains may not need the full feature version as the Utilities do, the system is modular. Our clients can choose what features they want to have. From load profile monitoring to automatic mass meter registration, Enersis is a flexible solution for everyone. You can read more about Enersis using the link below.
